ABB commits to more Scandinavian EV chargers
Swiss electronics multinational ABB has signed a deal to install a network of 48 high-power electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across Denmark, Norway and Sweden before the end of the decade.
The project is a joint venture between ABB and E.ON and the first station has just opened in Fredericia in Denmark.
Fredericia is one of eight EV stations that E.ON and ABB will launch in Denmark before the end of 2020. The stations will feature high-powered EV chargers which are able to top a car up with as much as 200km of range in eight minutes.
The Danish government is aiming to phase out the sale of new petrol cars by 2030 in favour of EVs, while the Swedish government is aiming to remove the majority of greenhouse gases emitted by cars and other transport before the end of 2030.
The Norwegian government has gone a step further and has announced an ambitious target to ban petrol cars completely by 2025.
ABB recently struck a deal with the international convenience store and fuel retailer Circle K to fit high-powered EV chargers in the store’s car parks. ABB will supply its Terra High Power 175kW EV chargers to Circle K’s energy stations in Norway.
ABB has sold over 10,500 high-speed DC chargers in 73 countries. The company opened its first DC charging network in 2012 and launched the first electric bus charger in Europe in 2016.
Last month, ABB and UK-based clean energy business Octopus joined forces to help companies accelerate their transition to developing electric vehicle fleets.
The new pair has seen Octopus assist companies source not only the financing required to switch to EVs, but the renewable energy supply that the vehicles will need.
Potential operators will be able to source mobility investment from Octopus through flexible financing models. For example, Octopus has deployed an innovative pay-as-you-drive system to finance the new LEVC taxis that can be seen on the roads of London.
